Golden Spike

The most significant and most successful athletic meet in the Czech territory, which Česká sportovní has been co-organizing together with tennis club TK Plus Prostějov and athletic club SSK Vítkovice.

The last ten years of cooperation has really brought the Ostrava Golden Spike meet to the top. A three time Olympic winner Marion Jones (who had to return her titles due to doping allegations) took part in Ostrava as the first athletic megastar in 2002. Big names followed such as Asafa Powell, Jeremy Wariner, Hicham El Guerrouj, Bershawn Jackson, Felix Sanchez, Maria Mutola, Meseret Defar, Blanka Vlasic, Yelena Isinbayeva. The Vítkovice stadium has become the place of world records breaking. Three records were set by Ethiopian long-distance runners – Kenenisa Bekele broke set the world record in the 10,000 m at the Vítkovice stadium and Haile Gebrselassie broke historic charts even twice (20,000 m and the One hour run). In 2008, the later Olympic champion Dayron Robles from Cuba shocked with the world record in 110 m hurdles.

The last seasons in Ostrava were  under the sign of the man who reigns the world athletics -  Usain Bolt. No matter how busy his schedule of starts Ostrava is not missing in it.
